Saint Francis Solanus Mission

Yesterday, we rode into the Courte Oreille Obijwe Reservation. As we have found on reservations generally, the residents are much more friendly and helpful than off the reservation. A woman stopped her car and told us that a storm, which had been looming all day, was coming soon. Michael phoned the nearest motel, about seven miles away, and was told it was full. Our map showed no campgrounds in the area. We were across the road from an historicCatholic mission to the Obijwe tribe, so we went down the drive to see if we could camp there. As we rode near to t he beautiful old stone buildings, we smelled bread and pastry baking. We followed the signs to the gift shop and bakery, and met a volunteer who sold us cookies and rolls and told us we would "have to ask sister" about camping. . Sister showed us to the back yard of the convent "where the kids camp". We would need to put our food on the enclosed front porch because "We do have a bear." Before setting up camp, we learned that the apple pies were cool enough to eat. It never did rain, but the mosquitoes drove us into the tent by 7:30.
