The Wind

The wind has repaced the rain as our major weather preoccupation. North Dakota is quite windy, and mostly the winds are in our favor. That is, they are:
*Tailwinds - these winds blow us along from behind. Sonetimes, we hardly have to pedal at all. One day, we had a steady tailwind of 20 miles an hour all day long. I figured this out by the highly scientific Puppy Ear method. That is, when I rode under 20 mph, my hair flew in front of me. When I went over 20 mph, my hair streamed out behind me. At 20 mph, it just blew around in a confused manner. But we don't always have a tailwind. Sometimes the wind blows in our faces in a:
*Headwind - the pictures that I posted of myself riding into a headwind look as though I'm going fast because of the well-known Puppy Ears Effect. Actually, I'm going very slowly and fighting with the wind. On the other hand, sometimes we have a:
*Crosswind - this wind tries either to blow us off the road or to blow us into traffic. One day, we had a crosswind of about 35 mph, with much stronger gusts. (As determined by no science at all, not even Puppy Ear Science.) We had to lean into the wind, which was blowing at us from the left. It helped to ride on the sharply banked shoulder.

  1. Enlightening explanatory bit to me, in particular because Rev Ed said "What a great picture; look at her hair!" We've had welcome wind in our recent hot spell. It was not felt much by Carl who tended the fire under the lobster keg yesterday on the beach though. We missed you guys at the party but it was a good gathering and Dad enjoyed the food and phone calls. Love, Us

  2. The puppy ears effect explains it perfectly. The crosswinds sound scary.
